Flat Earth Theory is the belief that Earth is not a rotating, roughly spherical planet but a flat surface. Versions of the theory differ, but many modern interpretations describe Earth as a disk, often placing the North Pole near the center and Antarctica around the outer edge.

Although the idea has gained attention online, Flat Earth Theory is not supported by modern science, astronomy, physics, navigation, satellite technology, geodesy, or direct observation from space.

The Basic Idea

Most Flat Earth models reject the scientific understanding that Earth is an oblate spheroid: a body that is nearly spherical but slightly wider at the equator because of rotation. Instead, supporters often argue that the world appears flat in everyday life and that mainstream explanations depend too heavily on institutions they distrust.

Common claims include questioning photographs from space, rejecting gravity, challenging long-distance navigation, and proposing alternative explanations for sunsets, time zones, eclipses, seasons, and the apparent movement of the stars.

Observation: Flat Earth belief often begins with an ordinary visual experience: the ground appears level from a human point of view. Yet human perception is limited by scale, distance, atmosphere, and perspective. A surface can appear flat locally while curving across a much larger distance.

Origins of the Idea

Flat-Earth concepts appeared in some ancient cosmologies, but the modern movement is most closely associated with Samuel Birley Rowbotham, a 19th-century English writer who promoted a system he called Zetetic Astronomy. Rowbotham argued that Earth was a flat, stationary plane rather than a globe moving through space.

His model described the world as a disk centered on the North Pole, with Antarctica forming an outer boundary. After Rowbotham’s death in 1884, supporters continued promoting his ideas through organizations and publications associated with the Universal Zetetic movement.

Ancient Knowledge of Earth’s Shape

The belief that people in the past universally thought Earth was flat is a common misconception. Many ancient Greek scholars understood that Earth was spherical. Aristotle, for example, pointed to the curved shadow Earth casts on the Moon during a lunar eclipse and observed that different stars become visible as a person travels north or south.

Around 240 BCE, the Greek scholar Eratosthenes estimated Earth’s circumference by comparing shadows in Alexandria and Syene, the modern city of Aswan. By measuring the difference in the Sun’s angle between the two locations, he demonstrated that Earth’s surface curves and produced an estimate remarkably close to modern measurements.

Modern Interpretations

Modern Flat Earth Theory is not a single, unified belief. Some supporters treat it as a literal claim about the physical structure of the world. Others connect it to broader distrust of governments, space agencies, universities, scientific institutions, or mainstream media.

Some versions also overlap with conspiracy claims, including the idea that photographs of Earth from space, satellite data, or evidence from the Moon landings have been fabricated. These claims are not supported by credible evidence.

The Scientific Perspective

Science concludes that Earth is round based on many independent lines of evidence. These include satellite observations, spaceflight, lunar eclipses, time zones, global navigation systems, circumnavigation, long-distance aviation, geodetic measurements, and the changing visibility and motion of stars across different latitudes.

Earth is not a perfect sphere. Scientists describe it more precisely as an irregular ellipsoid, slightly wider at the equator because of rotation and unevenly shaped by mountains, ocean trenches, variations in gravity, tides, and the distribution of mass across the planet.

Important: Flat Earth Theory is not supported by scientific evidence. Earth’s shape has been measured and confirmed through astronomy, physics, navigation, geodesy, satellite observation, and direct space-based imagery.

Challenges and Criticisms

Critics argue that Flat Earth Theory fails because it cannot consistently explain the observable world. Phenomena such as lunar eclipses, the rotation of stars in the southern hemisphere, international flight routes, seasons, gravity, satellite communications, and time zones are explained far more accurately by the spherical Earth model.

The theory also tends to depend on increasingly complicated conspiracy claims to account for conflicting evidence. When photographs, measurements, and repeatable observations contradict Flat Earth explanations, supporters often claim that the evidence has been manipulated rather than reconsidering the model itself.

Why the Idea Endures

Flat Earth Theory continues to attract attention because it touches on deeper questions than geography alone. It raises issues of trust, authority, perception, evidence, and how people decide what is real.

For some, the theory offers a sense of hidden knowledge or independence from powerful institutions. For others, it illustrates how skepticism can become counterproductive when rejecting authority becomes more important than evaluating evidence carefully.

Whether viewed as a conspiracy belief, a cultural phenomenon, or a challenge to scientific literacy, Flat Earth Theory is a modern example of how older ideas can reappear when distrust, persuasive narratives, and online communities give them new life.
